About the Coffee

The Gatare washing station, the first of its kind in the area, was established in 2003 and boasts an excellent reputation for processing very high-quality coffee. Located in the Nyamasheke district of the Western Province at an altitude of 1850 meters, the station is surrounded by hills full of coffee trees. Gatare has a successful history of participation in the Cup of Excellence competition, where it has consistently achieved notable success. The station has extensive capacity, including a high-capacity disc pulper, washing channels, dry fermentation tanks, and several soaking tanks. Gatare employs seven permanent workers and during the season, hires an additional 90 workers, 80% of whom are women. The surrounding farms are generally small, averaging about one hectare in size – some farmers may only have ten coffee trees among other crops. All farmers using Gatare’s services receive ongoing training to achieve the highest possible yields from their trees.
