In the heart of the Nicaraguan region of Jinotega, coffee is born on the El Progreso and Linda Vista farms, which is more than just a beverage. For the Chavarría family, led by Salomon and his sons Norlan and Uriel, coffee is a family tradition and culture that was established by their ancestor Benito Chavarría. This family legacy continues with a constant emphasis on quality and flavor, which is the key to their success in the specialty coffee world.
Our journey with the Chavarría family began in 2018, shortly after the launch of our first Nicaraguan project - the Aranjuez Women’s Project. Although these projects are different, they share the same basic goal: to import excellent specialty coffee, support small local farmers, and adhere to responsible, ethical, and sustainable trade. Economic support is just one part of the success mosaic, where technological, social, and environmental support play equally important roles.
The Chavarría family is known for their determination to experiment and try new methods. In addition to the traditional washed processing method, they also explore other techniques such as the honey method or natural processing. With the help of our colleague Chepe, who provides training and cuppings to the farmers, the Chavarrías experiment with new fermentation processes, leading to further improvement in coffee quality. Their commitment to excellent quality and desire for continuous improvement is what makes the Chavarría family not only significant farmers but also inspirational partners. With each passing year, their coffee gets better, which always delights us when tasting the new harvest. Collaborating with the Chavarría family is an example for us of how fair partnerships can have a positive impact not only on coffee quality but also on the social and economic stability of farming families. Their story shows us that behind every cup of coffee are people, their work, effort, and desire for progress.
The El Progreso and Linda Vista farms are located at an altitude of 1050 meters, which is ideal for growing coffee plants. This location, along with the humid climate, guarantees high-quality coffee, as evidenced by their growing success. Our natural Nicaragua Norlan & Uriel coffee has a full, round body with an intense and complex flavor of rum, nougat, and mango. Natural processing brings vibrant, fruity, and sweet acidity, while light roasting highlights the long rum aftertaste.
